The domestic iron of lengthened form, at one or two ends, was patented for the first time in 1870 in the State of Iowa in the United States.
From now on, its new form made it possible to direct the iron in the two directions, thus facilitating the task. Iron was to be heated beforehand on a wood stove, to be then handled with a wood handle. Generally between 5 and 9 pounds (2 to 4 kilos), the weight of the domestic iron contributed as much as heat to the process of pressure.
In Québec, domestic irons were part of the domestic life of our ancestors during nearly one century.
